2025-02-12 18:39

It is with great sadness that we received the news that on February 10, 2025, Professor Wojciech Andrzej Dziembowski passed away—our colleague, a long-time employee of the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Warsaw, an outstanding astrophysicist, and the founder of the Polish school of asteroseismology.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Professor Dziembowski’s family and loved ones.

Wojciech Dziembowski was born on January 14, 1940. He completed his studies in astronomy at the Jagiellonian University in 1962. He earned his Ph.D. in 1967 at the University of Warsaw, where he also received his habilitation in 1977. He was awarded the title of full professor in 1988.

Between 1967 and 1969, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Columbia University, during which he focused on the study of stellar pulsations. In 1969, he began working at the Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, where he served as director from 1987 to 1992. Since 1997, he worked at the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Warsaw.

Professor Dziembowski’s scientific work focused on helioseismology and asteroseismology, particularly the study of pulsations in certain classes of variable stars, such as beta Cephei stars. His contributions to asteroseismology, the interpretation of stellar variability, and the study of the Sun’s interior left a lasting mark on global science.

Since 1989, he was a corresponding member and, from 2007, a full member of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Since 1997, he was also a corresponding member of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences. He received numerous awards, including the Bohdan Paczyński Medal awarded by the Polish Astronomical Society.

Professor Wojciech Dziembowski was not only a respected researcher but also a mentor and inspiration for generations of astronomers.

The funeral service for Professor Wojciech Dziembowski will take place on February 20, 2025, at 1:00 PM in the chapel of the Funeral Home at the Powązki Military Cemetery in Warsaw, followed by the escort of the urn with ashes to the family grave at the Old Powązki Cemetery at 2:30 PM.
