Implications from observing and modeling the internal kinematics of the LMC and SMC

I will review what we have learned about the internal kinematics of the LMC and SMC from recent observational surveys, in particular Gaia and SDSS-IV/APOGEE. By modeling the internal kinematics and comparing the results to simulations of the LMC-SMC-Milky Way interaction, we can deduce that the MCs likely experienced a close passage, amounting to a collision, in the last ~few 100 Myrs. I will also show how kinematic modeling can identify populations of outliers, and discuss their possible origin.
